Engineering that listens to the brain

Neuroengineering is where Cody’s technical training lives. It is the discipline of building systems that can measure brain activity, make sense of it, and act on it, turning raw neural signals into tools that can actually help patients.

His focus is closed-loop neuromodulation: stimulation that does not just run a fixed program, but continuously reads the brain and adapts in real time. It is a fundamentally different way of thinking about brain therapy, one built around the individual rather than the average.

Graduate Thesis

A real-time EEG brain-state decoder

At Johns Hopkins University, under renowned biomedical engineer Dr. Nitish Thakor, Cody built a real-time EEG-based brain-state decoder and adaptive controller for closed-loop neuromodulation, the cornerstone of his neuroengineering work.

1. Acquire

Capture brain activity non-invasively with EEG.

2. Decode

Machine-learning models read the current brain state from the signal.

3. Adapt

Stimulation is adjusted in real time to match that state.

4. Close the loop

The system keeps sensing and adjusting, continuously.
