The Story

Technical depth, meet clinical experience

Cody is currently pursuing his MD/PhD in Biomedical Engineering with a focus on Neuroengineering at the University of Arizona, Tucson College of Medicine. It is a demanding, dual path, training as both a physician and a research engineer, and it reflects how he thinks about brain health: as a problem that needs people fluent in both the technology and the patient.

He earned his Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering (Neuroengineering) from Johns Hopkins University, where he developed a real-time EEG-based brain-state decoder and adaptive controller for closed-loop neuromodulation as his graduate thesis, under the mentorship of renowned biomedical engineer Dr. Nitish Thakor.

His undergraduate foundation in Psychology from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he graduated with multiple scholarships recognizing academic excellence and leadership, laid the groundwork for his integrative approach to neuroscience and human health.

Across research settings at Johns Hopkins, the University of Arizona’s Brain Imaging & TMS Lab, and the John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu, he has built a body of work centered on personalized neuromodulation, and a rare combination of scientific rigor and clinical compassion.

The Focus

Building neuromodulation that adapts to the person

Cody’s research centers on personalized neuromodulation, brain stimulation that is tuned to the individual rather than delivered as a one-size-fits-all protocol. His clinical studies use repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to treat major depression, pediatric concussion, long COVID, and substance use disorders.

The engineering side aims to close the loop: reading brain activity through EEG, decoding the current brain state with machine learning, and adjusting stimulation in real time, the direction his Johns Hopkins thesis first set in motion.
